Penalty areas and 18th-hole drop zones
Red penalty areas are defined by red stakes or red painted lines. For a ball in the pond adjacent to the 18th green, the player may use the nearest of two marked drop zones as an additional Rule 17.1d option.
Protected trees and shrubs
Trees and shrubs marked by stakes or plastic guards are no-play zones and abnormal course conditions; free relief is mandatory when they interfere with the player's stance or swing.
Power-line replay
If a ball hits a power line or pole, the stroke does not count and the player must play again from where the previous stroke was made without penalty.
Out of bounds
A ball is out of bounds when beyond a boundary wall or fence, or beyond the inside points at ground level of white stakes with black tops and kerbs painted with white and black squares.
Practice-fairway no-play zone
The right-hand edge of the practice fairway, marked by white stakes with red tops, is a no-play zone rather than a penalty area. Free relief is mandatory from where the ball last crossed its margin.
Greenkeeper-area penalty area
The greenkeeper's area between the third and fourth fairways, marked by red stakes with white tops, is a no-play-zone penalty area; relief must be taken under Rule 17.1d.
Ground under repair and tree roots
Other areas marked by white posts or lines are ground under repair. Exposed tree roots within four club lengths of fairway-height-or-lower ground are also ground under repair, except for stance-only interference.
Obstructions, integral areas and bunker furrows
The club treats specified stakes and ropes as immovable obstructions, metal hoops as movable obstructions, woodchip, mulch and gardens as integral parts without relief, and water-made deep bunker furrows as ground under repair.
