Red-staked penalty areas
Penalty areas are defined by red stakes.
Immovable obstructions
Roads, paths, bridges, specified stakes, irrigation equipment and distance markers are immovable obstructions; take free relief under Rule 16.1 where stated.
Ground under repair
Marked or roped areas, unmarked constructed drains, earthworks and specified disturbed tree-work areas are abnormal course conditions with free Rule 16.1 relief.
Blue-staked no-play zones
A staked tree or garden bed marked by blue stakes is a no-play zone; take the applicable free Rule 16.1 relief.
Out of bounds alternative relief
White stakes with black tops define out of bounds. Model Local Rule E-5 permits its two-stroke alternative-relief procedure when a ball is lost or out of bounds.
Near-green obstruction relief
Take Rule 16.1b relief when an immovable obstruction is on the line of play and within two club-lengths of both the ball and putting green, unless the chosen line is clearly unreasonable.
Animal damage on the putting green
For a ball on the putting green, line-of-play relief from animal damage or sanded areas is available at the nearest point no closer to the hole; it may be off the green.
