Local Rules

Out of bounds boundaries

Out of bounds is defined by course-side points of white stakes with black tops, fence posts and similarly painted structures. Hole-specific boundaries also apply beside holes 4, 5, 7, 16, 17 and 18.

Canal penalty areas

For holes 1, 2, 6 and 7, yellow markings on the canal define the Yellow Penalty Area. On hole 7, red markings from the canal bend to the boundary fence behind the green define the Red Penalty Area.

Hole 7 — Opposite-side relief

When a ball enters the Red Penalty Area from the housing side of the canal, the player may add one penalty stroke and drop within two club-lengths of the equidistant opposite-edge reference point.

Holes 12 and 15 — GUR dropping zones

A ball in the marked GUR behind the 12th or 15th green must take free relief in the nearest white-painted dropping zone. This does not cover the canal or bushes beside the 16th tee.

Protection fence relief

When the protection fence between the 15th and 17th tees interferes with stance or swing, the player may use the dropping zone at the north-west end of the fence.

Protected young trees

Young trees identified by stakes, protection or an artificial guard are no-play zones. If one interferes with the ball, stance or intended swing outside a penalty area, mandatory free relief applies.

Ground under repair

GUR includes areas marked by white paint or stakes or light-blue stakes, dead or bare patches on closely mown general areas, and bordered ornamental gardens on tees 1, 11, 12 and 18 and the practice green.

Immovable obstructions

The published list of artificial course objects, internal protection screens and non-boundary stakes is treated as immovable obstructions under Rule 16.1b. Free relief is unavailable while the ball is in the canal penalty area.

Clubhouse gardens no-play zone

The clubhouse gardens marked by white stakes are a no-play zone. Take relief within one club-length of a white stake, no nearer the hole, or use the nearest marked dropping zone where provided.

Fairway tree-root relief

Free relief is available when tree roots interfere with a ball in a closely mown fairway area, but not when they interfere only with the player's stance.

Bird damage on putting greens

On putting greens, bird-damaged areas are treated as ground under repair and relief is allowed unless the damage interferes only with the player's stance.

Course Intelligence

Course Character

Treat Barnwell as a placement course: the smarter club that leaves a full shot is often the winning play. The Five Dock layout is welcoming in length but still asks for precision around small greens and narrow-looking landing areas. Barnwell Park is short, walkable Sydney golf with a bayside twist.

Major Risks

Small protected greens Even on a shorter course, the greens ask for controlled distance because a sloppy miss can leave an awkward recovery. Narrow landing zones Recent golfer feedback says the fairways look and play tighter than the short card suggests. Short-course overconfidence Barnwell rewards patience more than power, especially when the next shot matters more than raw yardage. Strategic bunkers around the targets Official-body and golfer-review coverage both point to the course being more exacting near the greens than its length first implies.

Blue Tee Strategy

No official Blue tee mapping was verified in this research pass. Blue tee strategy was not verified.

Golfer Reviews / Consensus

The same reviews warn that narrow fairways and small greens stop Barnwell from being a simple pitch-and-putt. Golfer feedback sees Barnwell as fun and accessible, but much trickier than its short scorecard first suggests. MEDIUM Recent public reviews praise the value, quick round time and friendly atmosphere.

Course Conditions

NOT_VERIFIED Current conditions were not verified. Check with the club or booking channel before tee-off. Treat course conditions as unknown until the club confirms them. No current-condition source was accepted in this research pass.

30-second Pre-round Brief

Barnwell Park Golf Club · before tee-off Barnwell's shorter layout rewards the club that leaves the best next shot, not the longest opening swing. Play for position Small targets and their surrounds make precise distance control central to scoring. Respect the greens The course is designed to tempt careless aggression, so take the shot that keeps the card clean. Stay patient on the short holes Public reviewers mention softer going after rain, so confirm the day's playing feel at the club instead of assuming it. Check today's ground feel on arrival At Barnwell, let restraint and clean approach play do the scoring instead of trying to overpower a short card.
