Course marker definitions
Black-topped white pegs, marked concrete paths and boundary fences define out of bounds; red and yellow pegs define penalty areas; white pegs or lines and active groundstaff work define ground under repair.
Pathway relief
A ball on a defined pathway may be lifted and dropped under Rule 16.1a; bare ground or soil alone is not a pathway.
Qualifying bare-patch relief
A bare patch at least 30 cm in any dimension on a fairway or closely mown area may receive Rule 16.1b relief; no relief is given from divots.
Damaged putting-surface relief
Bare or damaged areas on a putting surface are ground under repair when the ball is on the green or the area is on the line of putt.
Garden areas played as they lie
Garden and wood-chip areas not marked as red penalty areas are in play with no free relief; concrete garden borders are immovable obstructions.
